Inserting horizontal rules

A horizontal rule (or horizontal line) is a line used to visually divide sections of content in a document. By default, it stretches all the way across its parent containerThe element, frame, or window that immediately contains the current element.

To insert a horizontal rule
  1. Place the insertion point where you want to insert the horizontal rule.
  2. On the Insert menu, go to the Text group and click Insert Horizontal Line.

Namo Web Editor icon note Inserting horizontal rulesIf you insert a horizontal rule in the middle of a paragraph, list item, or similar block element, the element will be split into two elements above and below the rule.

To adjust a horizontal rule’s width, height, and other properties
  1. Right-click the horizontal rule and select Horizontal Rule Properties in the context menu.
  2. In the Horiztonal Rule Properties dialog box, do any of the following:
    • In the Width and/or Height boxes, enter values for the rule’s width and/or height. Width can be specified in pixels or as a percentage of the parent containerThe element, frame, or window that immediately contains the current element‘s width; height can only be specified in pixels.
    • In the Alignment section, select the alignment of the rule with respect to its parent container. (This only has an effect if the rule’s width is smaller than that of the parent container.)
    • Select the Solid line check box to remove the rule’s 3-D effect, making it a solid bar.
    • Click the color box and select a color for the rule. (If you specify a color, the rule becomes a solid bar regardless of the state of the Solid check box.)

Inserting horizontal rules
