Specifying the default file extension for a template

Normally, when you save a new document and don’t specify its file name extension in the Save As dialog box, the extension is automatically set to either “.html” or “.htm”, depending on the setting of the Default file extension option on the Save section of the Preferences dialog box. However, you can specify a different default file extension for a specific document template. This can be useful, for example, if you create a template for PHP documents: by setting the template’s default file extension to “.php”, you can avoid having to type “.php” at the end of the file name every time you save a document based on the template.

To specify the default file extension for a template
  1. On the Tool menu, go to the Tool Window section and click Resource Manager.
  2. Select the template for which you want to specify the default extension.
  3. Right-click the selected template and click Properties.
  4. In the File extension box, type the desired file extension. For example, “.php” (without quote marks).
  5. Click OK.
